Since 2006, The Hickory Elks Lodge and several area churches have banded together to provide a hot Sunday meal to those in the Hickory community because the Hickory Soup Kitchen is closed on the weekends. Each organization serves on a different Sunday during the month. The Hickory Lodge serves the Helping Hands lunch on the fourth Sunday of each month. The Lodge Helping Hands Committee is made up of 3 teams, each working to serve four times a year, once each quarter. Each team is made up of approximately 16 volunteers to include Elks members, Lady Elks members and their families and friends. Each team handles all aspects of preparing and serving the meal. Meals are served in the first floor dining room at the Lodge. Team members arrive at the Lodge at 10:30 AM to begin setting up the room. Those who are preparing the meal arrive earlier and are under the watchful eyes and guidance of the Lodge Kitchen Manager. The program is mainly funded with a grant from the Elks Grand Lodge, Chicago, IL. The Helping Hands program is a member of Second Harvest, a food bank supply center that has been set up for the purpose of providing affordable food to those organizations who feed those in need. Helping Hands is a wonderful and joyful event where our guests can be nourished with a good meal and a clean facility for social interaction. Take-home snack bags, clothing items and toiletries are also available free of charge to our guests. Holiday foods are served during the months of November and December with special gifts distributed to children during the December meal.
