Drug Awareness
The chairman of this committee is charged with implementing the Drug Awareness Program of the lodge, State Association and the Grand Lodge.  The State Association Chairman provides the local Chairman with a theme each year that is given to elementary school children to write an essay on, and for the younger children to color a poster using the theme. Some themes in the past have been ” I rather eat bugs than do drugs “,”Down with drugs – Up with awareness”. The Hickory Lodge winning poster and essay is then submitted to the State Chairmen for judging with the winner announced at the State Convention. Our State’s winning poster is also submitted to Grand Lodge to be put in a coloring book that is distributed to all 50 States ,Guam and Puerto Rico !   Also, the Elks have a trailer provided by the State Association that can be used at community functions to distribute literature on the problems of Drug Abuse.

The Lodge’s Americanism Committee supports one of the most important aspects of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America, the concepts of Americanism and Patriotism. Through the many programs sponsored by the Americanism Committee these concepts are promoted throughout the year. Starting with our middle school students’ Americanism Essay Contest and continuing on to recognize outstanding JROTC cadets in High School. The Committee honors exceptional military service persons of the year as well as public servants of the year to include a firefighter, police officer, and state highway patrolman. The Americanism Committee endeavors to highlight those who personify excellence in the performance of their duties and to the community in which they reside. As well, each year the Americanism Committee, in partnership with the Lodge’s Veterans Committee, hosts the city’s Flag Day ceremony and Veterans Day Ceremony. This committee offers our members wonderful opportunities that focus on our community. Lastly, but not least, at the end of each Elk year, the Americanism Committee honors the memory of Elks who have passed away during the year.

 Youth Activities
Hickory’s youth deserve to live in a community that fosters strong values of charity to others, especially those in need; evenly handed justice and opportunity for others regardless of race, creed, color, gender, and ethnic group; love for fellow mankind; and fidelity to the concepts of Americanism and Patriotism. Through its various programs and in partnership with other committees such as Americanism, Veterans, and Drug Awareness, the Youth Activities Committee diligently serves our youth. The largest program administered by the Youth Activities Committee is the Elks National “Hoop Shoot” free throw contest involving 3.5 million children annually nation-wide. Hickory’s Youth Activities Committee reaches out to all the elementary and middle schools in Catawba County to engage their students in this program. On average, over 6,000 students across the county participate in the Hickory Elks Hoop Shoot program. School athletic coaches run the Hoop Shoot program at their individual schools to determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, boys and girls, in various age groups. Winners then advance to various stages of competition to include the N.C. Elks Hoop Shoot State Finals. State winners advance to the Elks U.S. Regional contest with an opportunity to compete for the National Level Elks Hoop Shoot title. Additionally, the Youth Activities Committee is very active in supporting the YMCA youth sports program, various youth sports travel teams, Boy/Girl Scouts and the City of Hickory’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt.
